Fellow reviewer Ralph Moore is spot on - a wonderful CD. In my own collection, I also have the Amadeus Quartet's rendition of Dvorak's "The American" quartet, as well as a recording of the same by Rudolf Firkusny and the Juilliard Quartet. Carney's version is hands down my favorite for the reasons cited by Ralph. Of note, Carney diverges sharply from the Amadeus and Juilliard versions in that the first movement clocks in at 9:39, whereas the Amadeus and Juilliard both come in at a bit over 7 minutes. I'll hazard a guess that the latter is the convention for this piece (after all, it is marked "Allegro"), so purists may scoff at Carney's pacing in that movement, but it works for me!As for the Borodin #2, Carney also puts forth a fine performance, and may even have the edge over the Borodin Quartet's version of this piece. Since the CD is worth the price for the Dvorak alone, I view the Borodin as simply a bonus.
