Description

Hailed as the best new opera since Gershwin's Porgy and Bess', Gian Carlo Menotti's The Saint of Bleecker Street won the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the New York Drama Critics Circle award for Best Musical. Its underlying themes of immigrant life and religious fervour remain topical today. The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore is part masque, part ballet and part chamber music. It presents three stages in the life of an eccentric poet, symbolised by the allegorical animals of the title.

I am writing to comment that it is great to have these two recordings readily available on CD. The RCA recording of The Saint of Bleeker St has been in and out of the catalog multiple times but only recently on CD, a CDR from a reputable company, but made to order CDs are an iffy prospect. The performance, reviewed from an old vinyl set still in good condition is tremendous. This is one of Menotti's finest operas and should be performed regularly, but it isn't. The performance has some cuts which do detract because there is some important expository material in absentia. The Chandos recording is complete but suffers some serious flaws vocally and they are in the two primary role. Here David Poleri and Gabrielle Ruggierio have the big voices required.I have not heard the recording of The Unicorn, The Gorgon and the Manticore since I was a little boy, taken out from the library. It has had several other recordings, more modern ones, but Thomas Schippers, the conductor had a close relationship with Gian Carlo Menotti, so I think it is safe to say that this version could be considered authentic.Thank you to Naxos, as always for licensing these and making them available.
