Description

“Strävan” is the third opus from the enigmatic yet revered Swedish black metal duo Murg. Embarking on a sinister and sombre journey, the album is driven by deliberate, slow-paced riffs that emanate stoic darkness and fierce pride. Murg embrace a musical minimalism that cuts straight to the bone, defying simplicity and predictability. “Strävan” stands tall and unwavering in its unyielding intensity – as a resolute farewell to creation itself.

Murg is a young two-man black metal band from Sweden. This is an excellent conclusion to a trilogy of albums which apparently tells the story of ecocide and extinction. Cheerful stuff! The first album, "Varg & Bjorn" (Wolf and Bear) from 2015, tells the tale of humans' destruction of the environment -- ecocide. The second "Gudatall" (Godpine), released in 2016, is the pitiful story of a few surviving humans living in holes in the ground. Finally, in "Stravan," the human race goes extinct. It may be that there is some further cosmic apocalypse as well. This is all a bit conjectural, as the band does not provide its lyrics and sings in Swedish. I have pieced this together from several articles and interviews, and so take it for what it's worth.Personally I am impressed by Murg's apparent commitment to opposing ecocide, which puts them in the good company of Wolves In the Throne Room, Agalloch (sadly defunct), and Blut Aus Nord. But this is strong, basic black metal with a few acoustic flourishes and hints of Viking metal, which should appeal to metal fans regardless of the lyrical content. While not melodic per se, there are motifs and chord progressions throughout which give the music a warmth and accessibility within the genre parameters. One of the best metal albums of 2019!
