This Warner Apex CD was originally released by Erato in 1991 and drew positive reviews in various publications at that time. I think I'm right in saying that it was the first release by the combination of Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and was taped in 1990, just prior to Barenboim's appointment as the CSO's main conductor.Ein Heldenleben is given a dynamic recording, with a wide range between the quieter and louder passages. The famous CSO brass section is terrific and the strings excel themselves, too. This, I think, is one of Barenboim's best recordings.Till Eulengenspiegel comes across as OK, but it's a bit superficial in places.At the time this CD was released, Michael Tilson Thomas and the LSO had not long recorded these same works for CBS/Sony RICHARD STRAUSS Ein Heldenleben; Till Eulenspiegel. Tilson Thomas produced a much chillier performance than the Barenboim release; this different approach is certainly worth hearing if you can track down a copy of the CD at a reasonable price! On balance, however, the Erato recording is much more suited to the work. The orignial release on Erato was Till Eulenspiegel/Ein, which might be a better second-hand buy as this Apex disc has no notes other than the bare-bones facts surrounding the recording dates!Recommended.
