This disc, well recorded in 1997, features the young Henschel quartet who are rapidly making quite a name for themselves on the international scene. The quartet consists of three siblings, Christoph, Markus and Monika Henschel, plus cellist Mathias Beyer. The disc contains two quartets, numbered 10 and 14, with the famous Death and the Maiden quartet being the fourteenth. In both cases the quartet favour lively speeds and precise articulation. This does two things. It emphasises the dramatic content of the music, which is particularly appropriate in the case of the later quartet, and it also emphasises the youth of the two works and that is particularly appropriate to the earlier quartet. Schubert, of course, died young and in unpleasant circumstances which darkened many of his later compositions. That darkening is obviously apparent in the Death and the Maiden quartet and those concerns are not missed by these young players. There has been a marked technical advance in string chamber music playing over the last forty years or so. Back then, quartets such as the Italian Quartet were known for their technical accuracy as well as for their musical insights. Nowadays there are many groups with those characteristics, and many of these are young players who are choosing to make chamber music their career choice. In the past, the majority of the best players gravitated towards an orchestral career but that is no longer always the case, possibly because of the lack of orchestral opportunities. Whatever the reason, we are living at a time when the highest standards of the past are increasingly becoming the normal standards of the present. This group and this disc are good examples of that shift.I would therefore suggest that this disc makes a very attractive proposition for purchase, especially bearing in mind its current low cost.
