Description

Antonio Vivaldi gave descriptive titles to seven of op. 8s twelve concerti in its 1725 Amsterdam publishing, including the four concerti representing the seasons: la primavera, estate, autumno, linverno. For the four seasons, Vivaldi included four self-penned sonnets, each divided thrice, reflecting each concertos three movements. The 1725 publication indicated which musical passages are representative of which sonnet verses. Heard on this CD are these rarely recorded sonnets, in the original Italian. Different soloists for each of the seasons join the youthful musicians of EUBO.

HOW WONDERFULLY REFRESHING - and I didn't expect to be able to say that about a new CD of Vivaldi's Four Seasons!!!!There's currently such a lot of choice, but very few performances are as rewarding as this - with four young soloists at the top of their game, under the inspirational leadership of Lars Ulrik Mortensen (surely by far the best harpsichord director since Koopman or Pinnock?)I've never understood why so many performers attempt to defy gravity (or the weather!) in a struggle to offer something new.But not here: phrasing and dynamics simply sparkle, displaying (without recourse to gimmicks) a logical understanding of the sonnet texts. Much as I respect the playing of Fabio Biondi (amongst others), his musical decisions in Vivaldi often strike me as simply perverse - especially when compared to the classic Simon Standage version I return to most often. In this new EUBO recording you can have the best of both worlds - up-to-date scholarship, consummate technique, and a winning Joie de Vivre throughout :-)The two extra string concertos are the icing on the cake, and left me hungry for more = only FOUR SEASONS, but FIVE STARS
